LHER Training Programs 2010
Volunteer Meet & Greet 9/25 - Please join us for the next Open House at LHER! More!
Lucky Horse is committed to training both its volunteers and its horses. We believe proper education is as important to each horse's individual success at the rescue as it is in their potential adoptive home.
Equally important, is the educated handling of our volunteer's and their ability to help us, help more horses. That's why we offer informative, hands-on classes and training programs to help LHER horses and LHER volunteers build a solid relationship based on mutual trust, respect and understanding. All of our training programs at LHER are offered at a reduced rate for LHER volunteers and members with 100% of the proceeds going to benefit Lucky Horse Equine Rescue!
Natural Horsemanship Training To register, please email: Jen V at nrsmail_verizon.net Volunteer Application
Wednesdays at 12 noon and Saturdays at 4:30 (no NH Saturday Sept 11th or Saturday Sept 18th)
With a strong emphasis on safety and short term exercises for long term success, this class is sure to help you "think and talk horse" on a whole new level. Designed to help handlers learn to understand the horses point of view and then communicate more effectively with them, this 50 minute ground class allows us to work with volunteers and LHER horses simultaneously. Volunteers learn a valuable new skill set, have the opportunity to handle multiple horses as they enter the rescue and become ready to help future rescues yet to arrive. LHER horses receive individual attention and exposure as well as a new and improved skill set helping to ensure a lifelong partnership in a permanent home.
At just $25 per class (regularly $60), these sessions are a real bargain. Not only are you assisting in the training of a Lucky Horse equine, but 100% of the proceeds go directly to LHER to continue to help horses in need. Due to high demand and space restrictions, this class is available first to LHER members and volunteers, with priority given to Barn Buddies, Lucky Riders and Lucky Horse adopters. Are you not yet a volunteer but interested in attending and increasing your proficiency? Occasional spots are available at $45 per session -still a savings of $15 and still donated to LHER! Auditing of these classes is free of charge for all volunteers and loyal auditors will be given preference for open spots as they become available. Feel free to come check it out! Because both horse and handler benefit from consistent class participation and we do our best to match each horse with a consistent handler(s) until adopted, we ask that participants commit to regular attendance.
If you are interested in signing up for Natural Horsemanship, please email the instructor, Jen V at nrsmail_verizon.net to register. Please submit a completed Volunteer Application , with a memo requesting enrollment in Natural Horsemanship and Jen will contact you as soon as possible. Once scheduled, we ask that you extend us the courtesy of a minimum of 48-hours advance notice (by noontime Monday or Thursday _ 4 pm) if you will be unable to attend so that we may offer your spot to others on the waitlist. In order for our classes to run smoothly and ensure that each LHER horse gets to participate, please understand that we must charge the $15 class fee if we are not given sufficient advance notice to contact and give your spot and assigned horse to other interested volunteers.
Natural Horsemanship requires special halters, leads, sticks and strings. Loaner ground training equipment is available for your convenience at a rate of $10 per class should you need it but we encourage participants to purchase your own equipment as soon as possible to make sure we have enough for everyone. When you are ready to order please go to Downunder Horsemanship or Parelli and purchase a rope halter, 14 foot line and stick and string.

Heres what one participant had to say-
"Good evening Jenifer,
Just wanted to thank you for another wonderful day of training! I never knew there were soft rubber curry combs for the face! There is always so much more to learn and I love how you are so focused on safetysomething I dont remember anyone teaching me in my youthful horse loving days of LONG ago! I also love the way you bring it home for us by comparing how we handle the horses to how we treat/handle humans (hopefully!)! Makes it all make so much sense!! Laurie C"

LHER is committed to its volunteers and its horses. We believe proper education and consistent handling is as important to each horse's individual success at the rescue as it is in their potential adoptive home. Equally important, is the educated handling of our volunteer's and their ability to help us, help more horses. That's why we in addition to offering informative, hands-on classes such as Barn Basics, Natural Horsemanship, and our Lucky Rider Program, LHER has created our exciting Barn Buddy program another way to spend quality time with a Lucky Horse in need.
All horses deserve a little extra TLC and this exciting program provides just that, a chance for each Lucky Horse to have regular care by a dedicated volunteer. Groom, graze, and if approved, practice natural horsemanship skills and more! If you are interested in another way to help a Lucky Horse hands-on then this program is for you! So that each horse can benefit from consistent interaction, we ask that you commit to two to three visits per week on scheduled days and encourage participation in our Barn Basics and Natural Horsemanship classes so each horse receives educated, consistent handling. You pick the days and the time and we will work with you to choose the right horse. If you are interested in signing up to be a Barn Buddy, please email the Director of Volunteers, April C at aicg_verizon.net and submit a complete Volunteer Application , with a memo requesting enrollment in LHERs Barn Buddy program and she will contact you as soon as possible.

A special program that teams up our more seasoned volunteers with new ones. We ask that experienced volunteers offer an hour or two a week during which they can be available (if needed) to show a new volunteer the ropes and LHER routine. As you know, the training of volunteers is an ongoing and important endeavor. The more qualified we all are as handlers the more we can assist the horses as they prepare for lifetime homes. This fun program is a great way to give back with a minimal commitment and to ensure we are all on the same page.
Foal Training To register, please email: jaismith_comcast.net Volunteer Application
Near and dear to everyones heart is a special division of Lucky Horse Equine Rescue, our Orphan Foal Project . While our commitment to helping horses in need applies to horses of all ages, breeds and abilities this unique program caters to foals in need, and sometimes that is as early as mere days of age. In our continued effort to educate horses and humans alike, our one of a kind hands on foal classes start these babies off right - forging a relationship of mutual trust, respect and understanding. Like all of our training programs, LHER foal training classes are offered at a reduced rate with 100% of the proceeds going to benefit Lucky Horse Equine Rescue!
Offered every Sunday at 5 pm this exciting class is just $25.00 for LHER volunteers. Designed to teach basic haltering, leading, grooming and troubleshooting, these classes are strongly encouraged for potential fosters & adopters as well as all members our foal feeding team. At this age, most foals have limited access to training by humans due to their mothers protective instincts. Here is your chance to enter the secret world of a baby foal and go where many people have never had the opportunity to explore before. As all of the foals at LHER are orphans, you will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to help train these sweet creatures in preparation for adoption by their forever families.
Please email Jai directly at jaismith_comcast.net to sign up- advance registration is required. There is a minimum of seven people required to attend this class or the instructor may elect to reschedule. It is important that all the foals get out each class. Once scheduled, we ask that you extend us the courtesy of a minimum of 48-hours advance notice (by Friday) if you will be unable to attend so that we may offer your spot to others on the waitlist. In order for our classes to run smoothly and ensure that each LHER foal gets to participate, please understand that we must charge the $25 class fee if we are not given sufficient advance notice to contact and give your spot and assigned foal to other interested volunteers.
The foal class will be progressing through to Equine Affaire in November, during which we will showcase and adopt out our last few foals! We expect to get our foals very advanced in their training between now and then! Join the fun!
Thank you again to our host barn, Century Mill Stables for generously donating the indoor arena each and every week, and to Jai R. for her time. We at LHER are excited by the popularity of our Foal training class and are very proud of the progress made by our volunteers and foals!!
Lucky Rider Program To Register, please email: jaismith_comcast.net Volunteer Application
Are you an experienced upper intermediate/advanced rider? Do you enjoy riding a variety of horses at all levels and have regular time to give- a minimum of 2x per week? Then our riders program is for you! First for everyones safety and success, horses and humans alike, a CMS evaluation lesson is required of all participants. If you become an approved LHER rider, enroll in a weekly lesson on an approved Lucky Horse. You will then have the opportunity to practice ride that same LHER horse free of charge dependant on ring availability in between lessons.
This is a win, win situation. For every lesson you take on a LHER horse, CMS will generously donate 10% of its fees to LHER. Additionally, LHER horses will receive the proper under saddle education they need under the guidance of a quality equine professional. You have the opportunity to do a good deed and advance your own skills simultaneously with both structured lessons and free practice rides. What could be better?
Sounds great, how do I start?
First you will sign up for an evaluation lesson ($60) to evaluate your skill level. If approved, at that time you will be admitted into the program. You will then have another lesson or two geared towards matching you with the correct LHER horse. Once this is accomplished, you will be given a training plan by your instructor that you will follow during your training rides (no fee). Because it is so important to keep you and your new partner on track with training and schooling, you will be required to take one lesson a week, but may ride as many as 6 days a week, free ! This is a wonderful opportunity for both horse and rider to advance their skills as a team while the rider only has the financial responsibility for actual lessons. Just watch out! You might fall in love
Email Jai at jaismith_comcast.net to set up your evaluation and get you started!
